*Reading like a Writer by Francine Prose (isn't that a great name for a novelist?)
*The Elegant Universe by Brian Greene
Thrown out: don't waste your time
*The Golden Compass and the rest of the His Dark Materials series by Philip Pullman. I completely disagree with his philosophical premise and found parts of the the books blasphemous.
*S. by John Updike. I love Updike's writing style, but I'm always disappointed by the vulgar language. I made it about 10 pages into this novel before hitting a gratuitously graphic section that so disgusted me I quit reading the book. I was especially disappointed because the book alludes heavily to The Scarlet Letter, so I was interested in the comparisons, but I felt like the literary value wasn't worth the spiritual battle.
*Wobegon Boy by Garrison Keillor. Boring.
*Shalimar the Clown by Salman Rushdie Rushdie's story lines and writing style are fascinating, as usual, and I was sucked in and couldn't put the book down. However, you may find the language too offensive to make the book worth reading.
*The Battlefield of the Mind by Joyce Meyer (Thrown out because of overwhelming charismatic viewpoint. The topic is important, but the way she handled it was at times unbiblical.)
*Jennie Gerhardt by Theodore Dreiser (Problems with the moral tone; didn't like as much as Sister Carrie)
*Bridget Jones's Diary (I started reading it this summer because it was on the bestseller list, but I quickly threw it out because of the trashy content.)
*Velocity by Dean Koontz (Freaky scary. I don't do well with the horror genre.)
What I'm listening to (obviously, not all at the same time)

ESL moment
One of my ESL students left this charming comment on my chalkboard before I had a chance to write the day's writing prompt: "No school today . . . Go sleepy!" I still chuckle every time I think of it.
